The American Heart Association and Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin are bringing critical CPR education to Japan, training students and athletes to respond to cardiac emergencies and potentially save lives through the Nation of Lifesavers initiative.

The American Heart Association is taking decisive steps to improve cardiac emergency response in Japan, launching a comprehensive CPR education tour with Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin. The initiative aims to train thousands of students and athletes in life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques, addressing a critical gap in emergency medical response.
Throughout late March, the organization will conduct extensive training programs across multiple Japanese educational institutions. At the American School in Japan, approximately 1,500 students will participate in Hands-Only CPR training, learning essential skills to potentially save lives during cardiac emergencies. Additionally, 250 attendees at the Japan Flag Football Championships and over 80 students at Teiko University will receive specialized CPR instruction.
The campaign carries significant global health implications. In the United States, more than half of sudden cardiac arrest victims do not receive immediate CPR, resulting in alarming mortality rates where up to 9 out of 10 out-of-hospital cardiac arrest cases prove fatal. By expanding educational efforts internationally, the American Heart Association seeks to transform bystanders into potential lifesavers.
Hamlin, whose own near-fatal cardiac arrest during a football game in 2023 sparked national conversations about emergency medical preparedness, is serving as a pivotal ambassador for the initiative. Through his Chasing M's Foundation, he will also donate automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to local schools in the Kawasaki area, further enhancing community emergency response capabilities.
The Nation of Lifesavers movement, launched in 2023, has an ambitious goal of doubling survival rates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the United States by 2030. The Japan tour represents a significant international expansion of this critical public health mission.
Experts emphasize that CPR, when performed immediately, can double or triple a person's chance of survival. The training focuses on Hands-Only CPR, which involves chest compressions at a rate of 100-120 beats per minute, a technique that can be learned in just 90 seconds.
By bringing this vital education to Japan, the American Heart Association and Damar Hamlin are not just teaching a medical technique, but empowering communities with the knowledge and confidence to respond effectively during life-threatening medical emergencies.
