Montana's most anticipated winter sporting event, the Big Sky Skijoring Association's Best in the West Showdown, is set to electrify spectators with its seventh annual competition from February 7 to 9, 2025, at the Big Sky Town Center.
Skijoring, a distinctive winter sport that combines skiing or snowboarding with horseback riding, represents a thrilling intersection of mountain culture and western tradition. This year's event has expanded to a three-day format, promising increased excitement and complexity for both participants and audiences.
With 154 teams expected to compete across multiple divisions, the competition will showcase remarkable athletic skill and precision. Divisions include Novice, Snowboard Lite, Junior, Pro Snowboard, Switcharoo, Sport Ski, and Open Ski, offering diverse challenges for competitors of varying skill levels.
The event goes beyond traditional racing, incorporating spectacular intermission exhibitions featuring the Keith Sayers FMX snowmobile team and the Entourage ski crew. These performances will provide additional entertainment for the estimated 4,000 spectators anticipated to attend.
A total prize purse of $15,000 will be distributed among top-performing teams, highlighting the professional caliber of the competition. The event's venue will feature a comfortable vendor village with firepits, local food and beverage options, and western and ski retail brands, creating a comprehensive winter sports experience.
Ticket prices range from $10 to $45, with special discounts available for local Big Sky workers. The competition represents more than just a sporting event; it embodies a celebration of Montana's winter culture and the unique skills required in skijoring.
