Brown Paindiris & Scott (BPS Lawyers), a Glastonbury-based law firm, has announced a partnership with UConn Athletics to serve as the program's full-service legal partner. The collaboration comes at a critical time as NCAA policies undergo significant changes affecting student-athletes' academic and athletic careers.
The timing of this partnership is particularly relevant given recent NCAA reforms. In 2024, the NCAA eliminated restrictions on the number of times academically eligible student-athletes can transfer during their college careers. Athletes can now transfer multiple times without losing eligibility, provided they maintain good academic standing and meet progress-toward-degree requirements at their new institution. This policy shift offers greater flexibility but introduces complications regarding credit transfer, eligibility, and academic progression.
Additionally, recent NCAA reforms have granted student-athletes greater autonomy over their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), allowing them to engage in commercial activities without jeopardizing their eligibility. These changes create new legal complexities that require specialized counsel.
As the full-service law partner, BPS Lawyers will assist UConn Athletics with compliance support, contract reviews, general counsel services, and other legal matters. The partnership also aims to foster student development and community engagement while potentially creating opportunities for student-athletes to consider pre-law pathways, scholarships, and mentorship programs.
Firm Partner Nick Paindiris, a UConn graduate, stated, "We are happy to officially be a part of the support system for the Huskies and their student athletes. Whether it's helping the program navigate legal matters or setting up protections to reflect the needs of future generations, this partnership will allow us to make a meaningful impact."
The partnership leverages the University of Connecticut's strong academic reputation, particularly the UConn School of Law, which is a nationally recognized program that offers a range of degrees, certificates, and legal concentrations. Multiple attorneys at BPS Lawyers are graduates of the university's law program.
Another Partner at the firm, Ian Butler, highlighted the potential for inspiring student-athletes to explore legal careers: "The focus and discipline that athletes need to be successful in their sport translates pretty well to the legal field. Common undergraduate programs that can be great pre-law tracks include political science, history, economics, English, and philosophy. Basically anything that helps develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills."
This partnership represents a strategic alignment between legal expertise and athletic programming, addressing the evolving landscape of college athletics while supporting student-athlete development beyond their sporting careers.
