The American Heart Association announced today that Bradley A. Maron, M.D., FAHA, has been appointed as the new editor-in-chief of Circulation, the Association’s flagship peer-reviewed journal. Maron, a board-certified clinical cardiologist and distinguished researcher in pulmonary hypertension and right heart failure, will take the helm effective with today’s issue, succeeding Joseph A. Hill, M.D., FAHA, who led the journal since 2016, and Joseph Loscalzo, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, who served from 2004 to 2016.
Maron’s appointment signals a strategic move by the American Heart Association to continue advancing transformative science in cardiovascular medicine. According to Shelley Miyamoto, M.D., FAHA, chair of the Association’s Scientific Publishing Committee, “Dr. Maron’s appointment underscores the Association’s commitment to advancing transformative science shaping the future of cardiovascular medicine.” The committee selected Maron to lead the editorial content of Circulation, which remains editorially independent from the Association to foster open scientific dialogue.
In his new role, Maron aims to reinvigorate the type of cardiovascular science published in Circulation and fast-track information to readers with additional transparency. Key new features include the Clinician Lighthouse article, which offers expert-guided interpretation of diagnostic tests and patient management for practicing clinicians, and the Patient’s Corner, which provides content tailored for the public and patient community. Additionally, the journal will introduce graphic abstracts for all research articles, central illustrations for most invited papers, and video commentaries for select manuscripts. The submission process will be streamlined with an accelerated and more transparent review timeline.
Maron brings extensive editorial experience, having served as a reviewer and editor for multiple cardiovascular and respiratory journals, including Circulation, The Lancet, and The New England Journal of Medicine. He has co-authored more than 260 scientific publications and holds six patents or inventions related to pulmonary vascular remodeling and precision medicine. His career bridges patient care, translational science, and precision medicine, focusing on how conditions affecting lung blood vessels impact the heart.
Joining Maron are Executive Editor Karen E. Joynt Maddox, M.D., M.P.H., FAHA, and Deputy Executive Editor Sadiya S. Khan, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA. Ten deputy editors will oversee specific topic sections, including Fundamental Sciences led by Joseph C. Wu, M.D., Ph.D., FAHA, and AI for Process and Science led by Thomas M. Maddox, M.D., M.Sc., FAHA. The journal will also be supported by 27 associate editors and guest editors.
The implications of Maron’s appointment are significant for clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals worldwide. The new features aim to make scientific findings more accessible and actionable, potentially accelerating the translation of research into clinical practice. For the broader cardiovascular community, the emphasis on transparency and streamlined processes could enhance the quality and speed of scientific communication. The introduction of the Patient’s Corner also reflects a growing trend toward patient-centered care, providing the public with direct access to key research findings.
Maron’s leadership is expected to further solidify Circulation’s position as a leading scientific publication. As the Association’s flagship journal, Circulation is part of a portfolio of 14 peer-reviewed journals, each editorially independent to ensure robust scientific discourse. The Association receives more than 85% of its revenue from non-corporate sources, maintaining the integrity of its science.
