Harpinder Brar, a business owner operating gas stations, grocery stores, and other ventures across Saskatchewan and Manitoba, is urging Canadians to recognize the daily operational pressures faced by local retailers and essential service providers. In a recent statement, Brar emphasized that many people underestimate the work behind running a small business, from inventory management to staffing and problem-solving.
According to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada, small businesses account for more than 98% of all employer businesses in Canada and employ over 10 million people nationwide. Despite their critical role, many operators struggle with rising costs tied to fuel, transportation, inventory, staffing, and utilities. Retail industry data shows that more than half of small business owners work over 50 hours per week, and independent retailers face increasing operating expenses year over year.
Brar highlighted the importance of consistency and accountability in sustaining operations. "You have to be present," she said. "If you ignore things, they fall apart." She noted that repeat customers remain one of the strongest indicators of long-term business stability, and community spending at local businesses helps circulate money back into regional economies.
Rather than advocating for large-scale campaigns, Brar encourages individuals to take simple, practical actions: support local businesses regularly, treat frontline workers with patience and respect, leave honest positive reviews, and recognize the behind-the-scenes pressures small operators face. "You don't have to do something dramatic," Brar said. "Small actions matter more than people realise."
Brar's own leadership style has evolved through experience managing operations across two provinces. "I have become more practical and direct over time," she said. "Consistency solves more problems than emotion." She believes long-term stability comes from structure, discipline, and accountability rather than short-term trends.
The call to action comes as small businesses continue to navigate economic challenges. Brar encourages people to share these conversations within their communities and support dependable local businesses through consistent actions. "Responsibility matters," Brar said. "That applies to business owners and communities alike."
