CAHEC Announces 2024 Award Recipients in Affordable Housing and Community Development

The Community Affordable Housing Equity Corporation (CAHEC) has announced the recipients of its 2024 awards, which honor exceptional contributions to the affordable housing and community development industries. The awards were presented during the organization's annual Partners Conference in downtown Raleigh, NC, on June 4th.

Among the honorees, Charleston Square Apartments in Troy, Alabama, was named Development of the Year. The property underwent extensive renovations aimed at enhancing residents' quality of life while keeping rent increases to a minimal $5 per month. Upgrades included modernizing the community building, adding a computer center, indoor fitness center, gazebo, and covered picnic pavilion, as well as renovating the playground and improving accessibility features. Additionally, three units were designated for persons with disabilities or homeless individuals, furthering the community impact of the development.

The CAHEC Values Award was given to Shannon Pow, President and Owner of Remnant Management, Inc. Pow’s leadership and dedication to affordable housing were highlighted, with her extensive experience in various industry programs and financing opportunities. Her commitment to her residents and her proactive approach to leadership align perfectly with CAHEC's core values of Integrity, Excellence, Innovation, and Fun.

The Intergenerational Center for Arts and Wellness (ICAW) received the Outstanding Community Impact award. Spearheaded by Senior Services, ICAW aims to foster community connections and provide vital social services through a multi-service hub. The center offers a broad range of services, including elder care, healthcare, early childhood education, and arts. Its collaborative model involves twenty-one community partners and is expected to bring significant positive changes by enhancing access to essential services and fostering intergenerational interactions.

Tina Rice, a resident of Northpoint Commons II in Asheville, NC, was honored in the Resident Spotlight category. Rice is an instructional assistant at Buncombe County Schools and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in social work. Despite being diagnosed with an auto-immune disorder, she remains committed to her community, volunteering at a local food bank, organizing clothing drives, and fundraising for various charitable causes. Her dedication to breaking the cycle of trauma and prioritizing emotional and psychological well-being exemplifies the spirit of the award.
