UGI Utilities highlights the critical importance of calling 811 before starting any digging project, emphasizing safety measures that can prevent serious injuries, property damage, and potential loss of utility services.

Call Before You Dig: Preventing Underground Utility Accidents Saves Lives

As spring approaches and homeowners and contractors prepare for outdoor projects, utility safety experts are urging the public to take a crucial preparatory step: calling 811 before breaking ground. According to recent survey data from the Common Ground Alliance, 27 million U.S. homeowners plan to dig this year without first contacting utility locator services, a potentially dangerous oversight that could result in catastrophic consequences.

Pennsylvania law mandates that both homeowners and contractors contact 811 at least three business days before any excavation work. This simple phone call enables utility companies to mark underground lines, helping prevent accidental damage to critical infrastructure like gas, water, electric, sewer, phone, and cable television networks. The service is free for homeowners and requires only a minimal annual fee for contractors.

The risks of neglecting this critical safety measure extend far beyond potential property damage. Unintentionally striking an underground utility line can lead to serious personal injury, community-wide service disruptions, and potentially fatal accidents. Underground utility lines carry significant potential for harm if accidentally damaged during excavation projects, regardless of their scale or complexity.

Chris Brown, UGI Utilities Vice President of Operations, emphasized the importance of this preventative measure: "UGI wants every dig on every project to be a safe one. Whether it is a small project or a major one, the same rule applies: call 811." Brown underscored that while calling 811 might seem like an extra step, it could ultimately save lives.

In addition to underground utility safety, experts also remind workers to remain vigilant about above-ground facilities. Contact with overhead power lines can be equally dangerous and potentially fatal. Homeowners and contractors are advised to maintain a safe distance from electrical infrastructure and exercise extreme caution during any excavation or construction activities.

As National Safe Digging Month approaches, utility safety organizations hope to raise awareness about the critical importance of preemptive utility location services. By taking a few moments to make a simple phone call, individuals can protect themselves, their communities, and critical infrastructure from potentially devastating accidents.
