Cherished Mom, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing Maternal Mental Health, has announced the launch of IsMomOK.org, an initiative designed to offer critical support and resources for pregnant and postpartum women. The new platform specifically aims to tackle the pressing issue of maternal suicide and mortality.
Maternal suicide remains a significant public health concern, ranking as the second most common cause of death during the postnatal period. Maternal Mental Health Conditions contribute to nearly 23% of pregnancy-related deaths, with 80% of these deaths deemed preventable. The introduction of IsMomOK.org seeks to address these alarming statistics by raising awareness and providing the necessary tools to prevent maternal suicide and its devastating effects on families.
IsMomOK.org aims to create a secure and supportive environment where mothers can access vital information, connect with a community, and find the resources they need for help and support. The platform includes educational materials, expert advice, personal stories, and resources for families dealing with perinatal mental health crises, particularly focusing on maternal suicide and mortality prevention.
Kristina Dulaney, RN, PHM-C, Founder and Executive Director of Cherished Mom, expressed her enthusiasm about the launch and its potential impact. "Through my own lived experience, I have a God-given passion to share and change the landscape around these conversations," Dulaney said. IsMomOK.org is expected to fill a significant gap in maternal mental health support by addressing the leading cause of death among pregnant women and new mothers in the United States. The platform offers a user-friendly interface, evidence-based information, and a supportive community aimed at reducing the stigma surrounding maternal mental health, addressing maternal suicide and mortality, and empowering women to seek the care and support they need.
As part of the Is Mom OK? campaign, Cherished Mom will host a Butterfly Release Memorial event on Friday, September 20th, 2024, in honor of those who have lost their lives to maternal suicide. The event aims to symbolize transformation, hope, and the need for support amid these challenges.
