The Colorado FIRST community is mourning the loss of Tony English, a board director and executive director whose passion for STEM education left an indelible mark on students and educators alike. English, who passed away on June 16, 2025, was celebrated for his dedication to expanding access to FIRST programs, inspiring countless young minds to pursue careers in science and technology.
English's journey with Colorado FIRST began in 2006 when he founded a FIRST® LEGO® League team for his children, eventually leading to the creation of Team 4499 "The Highlanders". This team has influenced over 150 students, many of whom have embarked on STEM-related paths. His contributions were nationally recognized in 2015 with the Woody Flowers Finalist Award, highlighting his exceptional mentorship and leadership.
In response to this profound loss, the Colorado FIRST Board has appointed Debbie English as the new Executive Director and Board Member. With her extensive experience as a Program Leader and her shared vision with her late husband, Debbie is poised to uphold the mission of inspiring Colorado's youth through STEM education. The board expressed their confidence in her ability to lead with the same passion and dedication that Tony exemplified.
Tony English's legacy is a testament to the transformative power of mentorship and education. His work has not only shaped the lives of individual students but has also strengthened the foundation of STEM education in Colorado. As the community reflects on his contributions, the commitment to advancing his vision remains unwavering, ensuring that future generations will continue to benefit from the opportunities he championed.
