The Colorado Judicial Institute (CJI), Colorado's independent nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to court excellence and public trust, will host a Thought Leadership Forum addressing artificial intelligence's growing influence on the legal community. The November 6 event titled "AI Today: What the Legal Community Needs to Know Right Now" brings together judges and legal experts to examine how AI is reshaping legal practice from courtroom ethics to law firm innovation.
"AI is no longer a future trend. It's here now, and it's already testing the boundaries of ethics, professionalism, and trust in our courts," said CJI Board Chair Thor Nelson. The forum aims to provide Colorado's legal community with insights needed to navigate both the risks and opportunities presented by AI technologies.
The panel will feature three distinguished legal experts addressing different aspects of AI integration. Hon. Lino Lipinsky of the Colorado Court of Appeals will discuss "Ethics Rules & AI," examining how the Colorado Rules of Professional Conduct govern attorneys' use of generative AI, including real-world cases of misuse and their consequences.
Hon. Maritza Dominguez Braswell from the U.S. District Court, District of Colorado will address "AI & the Law Today," exploring AI's societal and legal impacts with particular focus on bias, accuracy, and the distinction between what AI can do versus what it should do in legal contexts.
Katina Banks, Esq. of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP will present "AI in Practice," examining how law firms are integrating AI into client service and the frameworks necessary for responsible adoption. The event will take place at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP's Denver offices at 1900 Lawrence Street, with registration and networking from 4:00-5:00 p.m. followed by the forum from 5:00-6:30 p.m.
Registration is available through CJI's website with fees set at $100 for CJI members and $125 for non-members. The forum offers 2 CLE credits, including 0.8 ethics credits and 1.2 general credits, reflecting the program's emphasis on both practical application and ethical considerations. The event is sponsored by Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP and Maverick Public Relations, with additional sponsorship opportunities available.
This forum represents a critical response to the rapid integration of AI technologies in legal practice, addressing concerns about ethical boundaries, professional standards, and public trust in judicial systems. As AI tools become increasingly sophisticated and accessible, the legal community faces urgent questions about how to leverage these technologies while maintaining the integrity of legal proceedings and client representation.
The discussion comes at a pivotal moment when courts nationwide are grappling with AI-generated content in legal filings and the potential for algorithmic bias in legal decision-making. By bringing together judicial perspectives and practical experience, the forum aims to establish guidelines for responsible AI adoption that balance innovation with the foundational principles of justice and equity.
