Comcast is significantly expanding its broadband infrastructure in rural Fresno County, targeting over 160 unserved locations in Riverdale and demonstrating a comprehensive commitment to digital equity. The project, supported by a $1 million grant from the California Public Utilities Commission and private investment, represents a strategic effort to enhance technological access in underserved areas.
The broadband expansion is part of Comcast's larger $4 billion technology and infrastructure investment across California. Beyond infrastructure development, the company has made substantial community investments, including donating laptop computers to all eighth-grade students in Caruthers and contributing $10,000 to the local Unified Education Fund.
Local leaders have praised Comcast's multifaceted approach. Orin Hirschkorn, Superintendent of Caruthers Unified School District, highlighted the company's holistic community engagement, emphasizing that their contribution extends beyond technological infrastructure to directly supporting educational resources.
Buddy Mendes, Fresno County Board of Supervisors Chairman, noted the potential economic implications of this broadband expansion. He emphasized that improved technological infrastructure could stimulate economic growth, support existing businesses, attract new enterprises, and significantly enhance residents' quality of life.
The network promises robust connectivity, offering multi-gigabit internet speeds with 99.9% reliability. This infrastructure is designed to support essential community organizations, including hospitals, schools, transportation systems, and emergency services, ensuring comprehensive technological integration.
Comcast's broader commitment to digital inclusion is evident through its Internet Essentials program, which has connected over 2.2 million Californians since 2011. The company has invested more than $130.5 million in cash and in-kind donations to nonprofits focused on digital skill development and connectivity programs.
For rural communities like Riverdale, this infrastructure investment represents more than technological upgrade—it signifies potential economic mobility, enhanced educational opportunities, and improved access to digital resources that are increasingly critical in today's interconnected world.
