The Cayenne Wellness Center and Children's Foundation, in collaboration with My Footprints LA, will host the Sickle Cell Awareness Family Day and 5K Walk on February 22, 2025, at Pelona Vista Park in Palmdale, California, to address critical healthcare disparities and support individuals impacted by sickle cell disease (SCD).
The event represents a multifaceted approach to raising awareness about a genetic disorder that predominantly affects African American and Hispanic-American populations. Participants will engage in a 5K walk, attend a blood drive, and enjoy family-friendly activities designed to educate and foster community solidarity.
Sickle cell disease is a life-threatening condition characterized by abnormally shaped red blood cells that can cause chronic pain, organ damage, and increased infection risks. Historically, research and healthcare for SCD have been underfunded, a consequence of systemic inequities and structural racism.
The event will offer more than just a walk. Attendees can expect entertainment including face painting, a bounce house, food trucks, and a DJ, creating an engaging environment for learning and community building. A critical component is the blood drive, conducted in partnership with the American Red Cross, which provides essential support for SCD patients.
Participation is priced at $35 per person, with all proceeds supporting efforts to improve resources, education, and care for individuals living with the disease. Blood donors will be eligible for a $20 Amazon gift card, adding an additional incentive to contribute.
By creating an inclusive, informative event, the organizers aim to address knowledge gaps, reduce stigma, and generate community action around sickle cell disease. The event underscores the importance of collective effort in supporting marginalized communities and advancing medical understanding.
