CPV Renewables Begins Construction on Wind Project in Pennsylvania, Repurposing Former Coal Mine Land

Competitive Power Ventures' (CPV) affiliate, CPV Renewable Power (CPV Renewables), has commenced construction on CPV Rogue's Wind, a 114 MW wind project located in Pennsylvania. This project spans Cambria and Clearfield Counties and represents CPV’s third initiative to convert former coal mine land into renewable energy sources.

Once operational, CPV Rogue's Wind will join CPV Maple Hill Solar and the CPV Fairview Energy Center in Cambria County, enhancing CPV's diverse energy portfolio. CPV's CEO, Gary Lambert, emphasized Pennsylvania's conducive business environment, citing the successful launches of CPV Fairview in 2019 and CPV Maple Hill, the state's largest solar project at the time, in 2023. Lambert noted that the new wind project showcases CPV's vision of a reliable, low-carbon electric supply essential for a responsible energy transition.

Sean Finnerty, President of CPV Renewables, highlighted the project’s focus on energy community development and brownfield revitalization. By transforming former coal mine land, the project aims to bring vital resources to the region, generate clean energy, and engage actively with local communities. Finnerty stated that CPV aims to play a significant role in the region while providing clean energy to Pennsylvania’s electricity consumers.

CPV Rogue's Wind is the first project linked to CPV's recent partnership with Harrison Street, an investment management firm specializing in alternative real assets. Harrison Street's acquisition of one-third of CPV Renewables will support the accelerated development of CPV's 4 GW renewable energy pipeline. Carolyn Arida, Senior Managing Director at Harrison Street, lauded the project as a significant milestone in their partnership, underscoring their commitment to sustainable infrastructure.

The project will feature 19 Vestas V-162 wind turbines, expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 32,000 households. Additionally, the project aims to reduce CO2 emissions, equivalent to removing around 28,400 cars from the road annually.

CPV Rogue's Wind is also set to contribute to land revitalization and community engagement efforts. The project will repurpose former coal mine land, generate new revenue for local municipalities, and create hundreds of jobs during construction. Tom Kakabar, Chair of the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority, expressed enthusiasm for the project, lauding CPV's professionalism and partnership.

The project will serve as an educational resource for visitors to the nearby Rock Run Recreation Area, allowing outdoor enthusiasts to explore trails leading to the base of the wind turbines. Gary Haluska, Chairman of Rock Run’s Board of Directors, highlighted the project's contribution to local revenue and clean energy provision.

CPV Rogue's Wind is expected to achieve commercial operation by 2026. It forms part of CPV's extensive 10 GW pipeline of renewable and dispatchable generation projects, including utility-scale power generation with carbon capture, aimed at supporting U.S. decarbonization goals.
