Dermatologist Kyle Owens Named 2024 Castle Connolly Rising Star

Kyle S. Owens, MD, a distinguished dermatologist based in Prosper, Texas, has been recognized as a 2024 Castle Connolly Rising Star. This prestigious designation highlights early-career physicians who are emerging leaders in their respective fields. Dr. Owens is affiliated with Lockhart Matter Dermatology & Aesthetic Center, which is set to expand with a second location in Plano, Texas, in September 2024. The new facility will be known as Lockhart Matter Dermatology, Mohs and Cosmetic Surgery Center.

Dr. Owens joined Lockhart Matter Dermatology in 2022 after serving as a staff dermatologist at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. A certified professional by the American Board of Dermatology, he is adept at diagnosing and treating a myriad of skin issues, ranging from viral, bacterial, and fungal infections to growth and pigmentation problems, and various types of skin cancer, including melanoma. His holistic approach to cosmetic dermatology involves the use of dermal fillers and neurotoxins like Botox and Dysport to achieve natural and subtle enhancements.

His recognition as a Rising Star is particularly significant given the peer-nominated nature of the Castle Connolly awards. “This is a big deal to me given that the nomination comes from my peers in medicine,” said Dr. Owens. “Being a physician is both a tough and honorable profession, and I am thankful to my colleagues for putting my name up for recognition.”

Dr. Owens’ journey into medicine was deeply personal, inspired by his mother's battle with breast cancer during his childhood. This early exposure to the medical field instilled in him a profound respect for patient care and autonomy. “As a physician, it is my job to relate the facts and dispel the myths for all my patients,” he emphasizes. “I want to give them the right information and then have an appropriate discussion on how to best treat their problems given their unique situations.”

Dr. Owens' commitment to patient education is evident in his proactive stance on skin cancer prevention. He stresses the importance of year-round vigilance about sun exposure, noting that even activities like skiing can result in severe sunburns. “Despite skin cancer being the most common cancer in the world, there are no real screening guidelines for it,” he states. He recommends that individuals, especially those with a family history of skin cancer or those who live in high-sun areas, begin regular skin checks starting at age 30 or 35.

Dr. Owens completed his medical degree at East Tennessee State University's Quillen College of Medicine and a three-year dermatology residency at Tulane University Affiliated Hospitals, where he served as chief resident in his final year. He also holds a bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences from Auburn University, graduating summa cum laude. His professional affiliations include Baylor Scott & White and Medical Center Plano.

Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors list, where Dr. Owens is featured, is published online and in various partner publications. The selection process is rigorous, based on medical education, training, hospital appointments, and disciplinary histories, and doctors cannot pay to be included.
