The Global Council for Tolerance and Peace (GCTP), under the leadership of H.E. Ahmed Aljarwan, has issued a pressing call for the de-escalation of tensions between Cambodia and Thailand. The council emphasizes the need for immediate actions to avoid any measures that could provoke confrontation, thereby safeguarding regional stability and the well-being of border communities.
In its statement, the GCTP outlined four critical steps to address the current situation. Firstly, it advocates for immediate de-escalation to prevent any actions that might heighten tensions. Secondly, the council stresses the importance of rebuilding trust through dialogue, urging both nations to resume and strengthen diplomatic and parliamentary communication channels to address concerns in good faith.
Thirdly, the GCTP highlights the necessity of normalizing cross-border trade to restore economic confidence and cooperation between Cambodia and Thailand. This step is seen as vital for facilitating trade and customs operations, which are crucial for the livelihoods of local communities. Lastly, the council calls for all actions to comply with international law, including existing treaties and ASEAN commitments, and to adhere to peaceful dispute resolution mechanisms.
The GCTP reaffirms its steadfast support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of both Cambodia and Thailand. It calls on all stakeholders to engage in constructive efforts toward achieving lasting peace in the region. The council's appeal underscores the importance of diplomatic dialogue and mutual respect as the foundation for resolving disputes and fostering a peaceful coexistence.
