Global Youth Powerhouse Summit 2026 Draws US$10 Billion in Venture Capital to Hong Kong Start-ups

HONG KONG — The Global Youth Powerhouse Summit 2026, organised by Hong Kong Youth Professional Global Advocacy, concluded on 5 October at the Conrad Hong Kong, marking its largest edition yet with more than 600 in-person participants and over 60 countries and regions joining online. The event, held entirely in English, focused on artificial intelligence, geopolitics, education, capital markets, life and health technology, and start-up financing, aligning with the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's First Five-Year Plan for Economic and Social Development (2026–2030) and the latest Policy Address.

The summit's significance lies in its role as a bridge between young professionals and international resources, particularly in the start-up ecosystem. Representatives of 11 venture funds managing an estimated US$10 billion in assets attended the closing pitching session, where 15 start-ups across healthcare, biotechnology, and technology sectors presented their businesses. These funds have invested in more than 600 start-ups across over 30 economies and backed at least nine unicorns, including Airwallex, Animoca Brands, Prenetics, and GoGoX. This direct access to capital underscores Hong Kong's growing appeal as a launchpad for innovation and its potential to drive economic diversification.

Chief Executive Mr John Lee, GBM, SBS, PDSM, PMSM, delivered a pre-recorded video speech, encouraging young professionals to seize opportunities and contribute to Hong Kong's high-quality development. He stated, "For our young people, I firmly believe that your opportunities ahead outweigh the difficulties. The HKSAR Government will join hands with all sectors to build platforms for you to thrive in Hong Kong, in our country, and in the global arena."

Dr Cheung Kwok-kwan, SBS, JP, Deputy Secretary for Justice, emphasised the rapid pace of change and the need for young professionals to adapt. He highlighted the government's GBA Task Force and the role of young people as "super-connectors" and "super value-adders" in helping Mainland enterprises go global. Dr Kevin Lau, MH, Founding Convenor of Hong Kong Youth Professional Global Advocacy, noted the summit's milestone status, saying, "This afternoon, venture funds managing an estimated US$10 billion in assets gathered in the room — and what they are looking at is Hong Kong's next generation."

Panel discussions covered critical topics. The artificial intelligence session, featuring speakers from Huawei, Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund, and Tech For Good Institute, explored AI adoption for SMEs and NGOs, with Ms Ilaria Chan warning about AI's potential misuse in scamming vulnerable populations. The geopolitics panel, moderated by Mr James Chau, President of the China-United States Exchange Foundation, underscored Hong Kong's unique position as a super-connector under "one country, two systems," with Professor Frederick Ma stating, "That is the power of Hong Kong."

The education session examined Hong Kong's role as Asia's education hub, with Professor Charles Ng noting the increase in local student quotas and Ms Jennifer Ma pointing to demand for trilingual education. The capital markets discussion, moderated by former CNBC anchor Ms Emily Chan Tan, addressed AI listings and asset tokenisation, with Ms Bonnie Y Chan, CEO of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited, stressing the basic function of matching capital with opportunity. The life and health technology panel focused on AI in healthcare, with Dr Sarah Salviilla advocating for preventive education.

Mr LU Chin Yung of Invest Hong Kong praised the city's safe environment and efficient government, which allow founders to focus on growth. The summit also featured consular representatives from up to 20 countries, further internationalising the dialogue. The summit's outcomes signal Hong Kong's commitment to fostering a dynamic new economy, with implications for young professionals, investors, and industries seeking to leverage the city's strategic advantages in AI, healthcare, and finance. As the event closed, organisers pledged to continue building the platform for dialogue between young talent and leaders, ensuring Hong Kong remains a magnet for global opportunities.
