Greenland Mines Completes Sarfartoq Rare Earths Acquisition, Bolsters Non-Chinese Supply Chain

Greenland Mines Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRML) announced on Sept. 1, 2026, the closing of its acquisition of the Sarfartoq Nd-Pr Rare Earths Project in southwest Greenland. The transaction, valued at $20 million in cash and $15 million in securities, marks a significant step in the company's strategy to build a multi-asset platform with exposure to rare earth magnet materials.

The Sarfartoq project is poised to play a critical role in the global rare earth supply chain. According to the company, the project's planned annual NdPr oxide production would represent approximately 34% of all NdPr oxide refined outside China at 2025 consumption levels during each of the project's nine scheduled operating years. This figure underscores the project's potential to alleviate Western dependence on Chinese rare earth processing, a strategic concern for industries ranging from defense to electric vehicles.

An independent Initial Assessment, based solely on the ST1 deposit, estimates a high-case pre-tax net present value (NPV) of approximately $2.05 billion and a pre-tax internal rate of return (IRR) of 118.6%, including Indicated and Inferred Mineral Resources. These robust economic indicators highlight the project's financial viability and the potential for substantial returns for investors.

With the acquisition complete, Greenland Mines plans to advance Sarfartoq toward a Pre-Feasibility Study. The company will conduct targeted infill drilling, pilot-scale metallurgical test work, mine engineering planning, environmental and social baseline studies, and drone-based magnetic surveys. These activities are essential to de-risk the project and provide the necessary data for a comprehensive feasibility assessment.

The acquisition also brings strategic benefits through a partnership with Neo Performance Materials (TSX: NEO), which became a shareholder in Greenland Mines as part of the transaction. Neo retains offtake rights for up to 60% of future Sarfartoq ore or mineral concentrate production for processing at its Silmet rare earth separation facility in Estonia. This arrangement not only secures a market for Sarfartoq's output but also strengthens the midstream processing capabilities within allied jurisdictions, aligning with Greenland Mines' vision of a North Atlantic Critical Metals Corridor.

The importance of this acquisition extends beyond the company's immediate prospects. Rare earth elements, particularly neodymium and praseodymium, are essential for permanent magnets used in electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, and various defense applications. Currently, China dominates the global supply chain, from mining to refining. By developing the Sarfartoq project, Greenland Mines contributes to diversifying the supply base and enhancing supply chain security for Western nations.

“The closing of the Sarfartoq acquisition is a major milestone for Greenland Mines and aligns with our strategy to create a platform with exposure to critical minerals,” said a company spokesperson. “We are committed to advancing the project responsibly and efficiently to meet the growing demand for rare earth materials outside China.”

The project's development is also expected to have regional economic benefits for Greenland, including job creation and infrastructure investment. However, the company has emphasized that environmental and social baseline studies will be conducted to ensure sustainable development practices.

As Greenland Mines moves forward with its pre-feasibility work, the industry will be watching closely. The successful development of Sarfartoq could set a precedent for other rare earth projects in the region and contribute to a more resilient global supply chain.
