Heisman Trophy winner Troy Smith is transitioning from the football field to the cornhole boards this fall, leading a unique initiative that combines athletic competition with mental health advocacy. The inaugural World Series of Cornhole and Legend Shootout Tournament will feature former Ohio State and University of Texas football legends competing in a friendly yet competitive environment while supporting important charitable causes.
Smith emphasized the deeper purpose behind the event, stating, "This is about competition, camaraderie, and creating new spaces for athletes to connect. It's fun, it's lighthearted, but it's also about addressing something very real—mental health. Athletes go through challenges like anyone else, and it's important to have healthy outlets and conversations around that." The event represents a significant shift in how former athletes are using their platforms to address mental health issues that affect both professional athletes and the broader community.
The tournament's charitable impact extends beyond the competition, with proceeds benefiting player-driven foundations and mental health initiatives. Funds will support Smith's mental health programs, the Vince Young Foundation, the Ted Ginn Jr. Foundation, Ricky Williams' programs, and select Texas-based 501(c)(3) organizations. Through his work with the Richard Swinsey Inner City Kids and Youth Foundation, Smith has long supported under-served youth by providing resources, mentorship, and opportunities in sports and education.
The two-day event features multiple components designed to engage fans and maximize charitable impact. Friday's schedule includes a Heisman Toast VIP gathering at The Athletic Club of Columbus and the main cornhole tournament at The Railhouse at East Market. Saturday events include a VIP tailgate experience near the stadium and an after-party at Draft Day featuring celebrity judges and music by OSU Football's official DJ Corey Grand. Cowboy Auctioneer Heath Hale will lead live fundraising during key events to drive engagement and support for the charitable causes.
Smith's focus on mental health reflects growing awareness about the importance of psychological well-being for athletes and young people. "Mental health is just as important as physical health," Smith explained. "If our mental health isn't where it needs to be, the days can pile up, leading to stress, anxiety, or worse. We want to stop that cycle, provide support, and give young people tools to succeed both on and off the field." The event represents an innovative approach to addressing these issues through community engagement and athletic competition.
The Ohio State vs. Texas rivalry adds an exciting competitive element to the event, with legends like Smith, Ricky Williams, and Vince Young participating. Smith expressed confidence in Buckeye Nation's support, noting, "We know Texas fans travel well, but we're in the championship city. I'm confident Buckeye Nation will show up strong to represent." Tickets for the event are available through the official World Series of Cornhole website and directly from the venue.
