The Humane Society Silicon Valley (HSSV) has announced its participation in the national 'Clear the Shelters' campaign, a month-long initiative aimed at finding loving homes for animals in need. The campaign, in partnership with NBCUniversal Local, runs from August 10 to September 10 and involves hundreds of organizations across the United States.
The importance of this initiative cannot be overstated. Every year, over 6 million companion animals are admitted to shelters in the U.S., with an additional 25 million animals living in poverty. Last year, the 2023 Clear the Shelters campaign successfully helped over 150,000 pets find homes and raised nearly $600,000 in donations.
'We are incredibly grateful to NBCUniversal Local for continuing to shed light on the issue of overcrowding in shelters,' said Kristen Jahnke, Senior Director of Operations at HSSV. 'The number of animals adopted last year is a testament to the power of collective action, and we are looking forward to making a difference in animal lives again this year.'
This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Clear the Shelters initiative, which has now surpassed 1 million total pet adoptions. To celebrate this milestone, HSSV is offering a special adoption fee of $50 for all animals over six months old. Each adopted animal will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped. Additionally, HSSV staff will provide expert tips on pet care and post-adoption advice.
The campaign also highlights HSSV's ongoing Keeping Families Together initiative, which includes a pet food pantry and a mobile wellness clinic to support families needing medical services for their pets.
The Clear the Shelters campaign's impact extends beyond individual adoptions. By raising awareness about the plight of shelter animals and encouraging community involvement, the initiative aims to create systemic changes that will benefit animals across the nation.
