Indonesian Student Surge Positions XJTLU as Key Global Education Hub

Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU), an international joint venture between China’s Xi’an Jiaotong University and the UK’s University of Liverpool, is solidifying its role as a top choice for Indonesian students seeking global education and career pathways. With approximately 700 Indonesian students currently enrolled and over 1,500 undergraduate applications for the upcoming September intake—accounting for 38% of total international applications—Indonesia has become XJTLU’s largest international market.

At a media discussion in Jakarta on June 24, 2026, Executive President Professor Youmin Xi highlighted the university’s multicultural environment: “XJTLU has faculty members from more than 60 different countries and regions around the world. Our students also come from nearly 100 different countries and regions, creating a campus environment where they are well accustomed to a diverse, multicultural atmosphere.” He emphasized that the educational model focuses on agile thinking and wisdom, integrating Western and Eastern perspectives.

XJTLU offers over 100 degree programmes in English across disciplines including science, engineering, business, finance, architecture, urban planning, languages, and culture. Undergraduate students receive two degrees: one from XJTLU recognized by China’s Ministry of Education and a globally recognized degree from the University of Liverpool. Postgraduate students are awarded University of Liverpool degrees, also ministry-recognized. PhD programmes are available across all departments.

Alumna Tuty Julfa, now running a fashion retail business, shared her experience: “I feel very fortunate to have studied at XJTLU, primarily because it not only strengthened my hard skills but also developed the soft skills essential for my career growth. It’s not just about academics, but also about interpersonal skills and how we cultivate perseverance and resilience.”

As part of its international expansion, XJTLU established an official representative office in Indonesia in 2024, and expanded its recruitment team in June 2026 to enhance services. Partnerships have been forged with leading Indonesian institutions including Binus University, Universitas Indonesia, Institut Teknologi Bandung, and Petra Christian University Surabaya, as well as education agencies and schools.

Professor Xi noted that 2026 marks XJTLU’s 20th anniversary, and the university is preparing students for an AI-driven future. From the first year, students learn about AI, its use, and ethics; in the second year, they apply AI in subjects like Mathematics and Engineering; and by the third year, they use AI in research. “We use AI to support education—upgrading, restructuring, and reshaping it. However, we do not aim to use AI to replace education. Our philosophy is ‘X plus AI,’ not ‘AI plus X.’ AI is not only about learning, but also about building resilience for the future,” he said.
