The Hispanic Public Relations Association (HPRA) has selected independent media journalist Julio Ricardo Varela as the 2025 ¡BRAVO! Awards Journalist of the Year, recognizing his pioneering work in creating Latino-led independent news spaces over the past twenty years. Varela will be honored alongside DEI Champion Adrianne C. Smith and Pioneer of the Year Karina Martínez during the awards gala on November 13, 2025, at The Drake Hotel in Chicago.
HPRA National President Sonia V. Diaz emphasized the significance of Varela's work, stating that he built one of the first Latino-led independent news spaces online long before such initiatives became commonplace. His ability to continuously innovate in the media space is particularly crucial given the current climate of rising inflammatory rhetoric, misinformation, and threats to local newsrooms. Varela's career demonstrates how community-rooted outlets can shape coverage and maintain editorial independence.
Varela's media trajectory includes founding Latino Rebels in 2011 and developing it into a nationally recognized digital outlet that became one of the top independent Latino digital news sites globally. He later served as President of Futuro Media, where he supported acclaimed programs including Latino USA, In The Thick, and Latino Rebels across both audio and digital platforms. At Futuro Studios, he led new business development to expand premium audio partnerships.
Currently, Varela serves as Senior Producer and Strategist at Free Press, writes as a columnist for MSNBC, and publishes The Latino Newsletter, which launched in May 2024 and has quickly become a daily destination for reporting and analysis through a Latino perspective. His reporting and commentary have appeared in major outlets including The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, and The Atlantic, as well as broadcast networks such as ESPN, NBC News, Univision, and Telemundo.
The recognition holds broader implications for media diversity and representation at a time when authentic community voices are increasingly vital. Varela's work represents a sustainable model for independent journalism that centers community perspectives while maintaining editorial integrity. His previous honors include the National Association of Hispanic Journalists' inaugural DALE Award for advancing fair and accurate portrayals of Latinos in media.
Varela, a Harvard College graduate cum laude who served as Sports Editor for The Harvard Crimson, credits community voices for shaping his work and mission. He joins an esteemed group of former ¡BRAVO! Journalist of the Year honorees that includes Alicia Menendez, Ilia Calderón, León Krauze, María Elena Salinas, María Hinojosa, and Teresa Rodríguez. The HPRA ¡BRAVO! Awards, established in 2014, recognize excellence in multicultural communications and celebrate the creativity and cultural fluency driving the communications industry forward.
