Lamborghini has officially canceled its plans to produce a fully electric supercar, reversing a strategy announced nearly three years ago when the company introduced the Lanzador concept as its bold step into electric performance. The decision comes after extensive market analysis revealed minimal customer interest in fully electric Lamborghini models, with most buyers expressing strong preference for traditional V8 and V12 engines.
The Lanzador concept, initially presented as Lamborghini's electric future, was scheduled for production in 2028 before being delayed to 2029. Development was halted at the end of 2025, and the project has now been formally abandoned. According to CEO Stephan Winkelmann, interest in fully electric supercars among Lamborghini customers is close to zero, creating unacceptable financial risk for the company.
This decision highlights a significant challenge facing luxury performance brands as they navigate the transition to electrification. While mainstream automakers and companies like Lucid Motors pursue fully electric lineups, Lamborghini's experience suggests that high-end performance customers may have different priorities. Rather than abandoning electrification entirely, Lamborghini is shifting its focus to plug-in hybrid technology. A hybrid version of the Lanzador is now being prepared for release later this decade, allowing the brand to combine electric assistance with traditional gasoline power. This same strategy applies to the next generation of the popular Urus SUV, which will continue as a plug-in hybrid rather than transitioning to full electric.
