A Lauderdale County jury has awarded $7 million to local dentist Sunitha Madasu in a medical negligence case against radiologist Donald J. Bowling and Lauderdale Radiology Group. The verdict, returned on September 24, 2025, followed a 10-day trial that revealed critical failures in medical diagnosis that resulted in permanent brain damage to the 46-year-old dental professional.
The case centered on events that began when Madasu experienced severe headache, nausea and vomiting and visited the Emergency Department at Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Lauderdale County. After examination, the emergency room physician ordered a CT scan of her head, which was interpreted by Dr. Bowling, who the jury found was working as an agent of Lauderdale Radiology Group.
Medical evidence presented at trial showed Dr. Bowling reviewed CT images showing a bright spot indicating an acute blood clot visible on twenty consecutive slices of the imaging. Despite this clear medical indicator, Dr. Bowling reported the study as normal and failed to mention or describe the suspicious area in his report. Relying on this interpretation, the emergency room physician discharged Madasu from the hospital.
Three days later, Madasu suffered a massive brain bleed that caused lifelong, debilitating injuries. During the trial, the defendants and their medical experts conceded that the bright spot visible on the CT scan probably represented a blood clot and acknowledged that a simple follow-up test would have confirmed the diagnosis. The defendants maintained their position that no medical negligence had occurred.
The evidence established that a reasonably careful diagnostic radiologist would have identified the bright spot, expressed concern about a potential acute blood clot, and recommended additional testing to evaluate the finding. Medical testimony confirmed that had these standard medical procedures been followed, Madasu would have received appropriate medication and made a complete recovery without complications.
Attorney Ty Brown of MARSH | RICKARD | BRYAN, who tried the case along with J.D. Marsh, stated that the jury's verdict enforced basic standards of safe medical care and held the defendants accountable for the independence, mobility and professional career they took from Madasu. Local attorney Kerrian Jaudon provided additional counsel during the trial proceedings.
