NanoViricides, Inc. (NYSE American: NNVC), a clinical-stage antiviral drug developer, has reported progress in its Phase IIA clinical trial evaluating NV-387 Oral Gummies for the treatment of Ebola Bundibugyo virus infection in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The exploratory trial, designed to enroll up to 20 patients with varying disease severity, is assessing the safety and tolerability of treatment regimens ranging from six to 12 days. Although the study is not designed to establish statistically significant efficacy, the company said it may identify preliminary signs of antiviral activity.
Following completion of the trial and evaluation of the results, NanoViricides plans to advance an appropriate dosing regimen into an expanded, randomized, controlled Phase IIB study, provided the findings support further development. NV-387 is a broad-spectrum antiviral candidate designed to reduce viral load by targeting host-cell features used by viruses during infection. This mechanism differs from many traditional antivirals that target the virus itself, potentially offering a way to overcome resistance.
The importance of this trial extends beyond Ebola. The Ebola Bundibugyo virus is one of several strains that cause severe hemorrhagic fever with high mortality rates. There are currently limited treatment options, and the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak in West Africa highlighted the urgent need for effective therapies. If NV-387 proves safe and shows signs of antiviral activity, it could represent a new tool in the fight against not only Ebola but also other viruses. According to the company, NV-387 is being developed as a treatment for RSV, COVID, Long COVID, Influenza, and other respiratory viral infections, as well as MPOX/Smallpox infections, and even Measles.
NanoViricides’ platform technology is based on the nanoviricide class of drug candidates, which are special purpose nanomaterials for antiviral therapy. The company has a Memorandum of Understanding with TheraCour Pharma, Inc. for the development of drugs based on these technologies for all antiviral infections. The company’s business model is based on licensing technology from TheraCour Pharma Inc. for specific application verticals of specific viruses.
For investors, the progress in the Ebola trial is a key milestone for NanoViricides. The company’s lead drug candidate, NV-387, is also being developed for other indications, and successful results in Ebola could accelerate development across multiple programs.
