Spine Surgeon Mark W. McFarland, DO, has successfully performed the first two Intraosseus Basivertebral Nerve Ablation procedures in the Hampton Roads region, utilizing the Intracept® device by Relievant Medsystems, Inc., a subsidiary of Boston Scientific. The groundbreaking outpatient procedures were conducted on Thursday at Mercy Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital in Newport News, Virginia.
The pioneering procedures were performed on two patients with chronic vertebrogenic back pain. The first patient, a 91-year-old man, had pain at levels L3-S1, while the second patient, a 53-year-old man, experienced discomfort at levels L3-5. Both patients reportedly recovered well and were discharged after a few hours in recovery.
