OHB Digital Connect GmbH, a subsidiary of OHB SE, has successfully completed the upgrade of military ground stations on behalf of the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw). The project involved progressively replacing the existing technology of mobile ground stations with modern satellite communications hardware for the SATCOMBw system, enabling step-by-step modernization and subsequent return to the Bundeswehr.
The completion was marked by a closing ceremony at Eifelkaserne in Gerolstein, where the final batch of four refurbished ground stations was handed over. This milestone concludes a significant effort to enhance the German military's satellite communication infrastructure, which is critical for secure and reliable communication in defense operations.
At the time the contract was awarded, Bremen-based OHB Digital Connect had expanded its capabilities through a merger with Mainz-based antenna manufacturer MT Mechatronics, which has since also become part of the OHB Group. The contract for the refurbishment of the ground stations thus marked the beginning of more intensive cross-site collaboration, leveraging combined expertise in satellite communications and antenna technology.
The upgrade of these ground stations is important because it ensures that the Bundeswehr maintains state-of-the-art communication capabilities, which are essential for command and control, intelligence gathering, and coordination of military operations. Modern satellite communications offer higher bandwidth, improved resilience against interference, and better integration with other digital systems, thereby enhancing overall operational effectiveness.
For the defense industry, this project demonstrates the successful integration of advanced commercial technologies into military applications, setting a precedent for future upgrades. It also highlights the role of companies like OHB Digital Connect in supporting national security through technological innovation. The collaboration between OHB Digital Connect and MT Mechatronics showcases how cross-site teamwork can accelerate project delivery and improve outcomes.
The completion of this project has implications for other nations seeking to modernize their military communications. As threats evolve, having reliable and secure satellite links becomes increasingly critical. The approach taken by OHB Digital Connect—gradual modernization with minimal disruption—could serve as a model for similar upgrades worldwide.
