The world's largest gathering of electric aircraft has just concluded at Oshkosh AirVenture, and industry experts say it reveals a market far broader than the flying cars and urban air taxis that dominate headlines. The event, which drew 700,000 attendees and 20,000 campers, showcased a diverse range of electric aircraft, including conversions of traditional planes and ambitious manufacturing plans that could reshape the industry.

Lisa Wright, founder of Landings, a company building vertiport infrastructure, attended both the main EAA AirVenture event and the Vertical Flight Society's Electric Aircraft Symposium. She observed that while electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft were well-represented, the larger story was the electrification of conventional aircraft. "There was great representation of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, the ones we talk about," Wright said. "But on top of that, a lot of the traditional aircraft are also converting to be electric. Cessna Caravans that land on water are being electrified. There were a lot of Pipistrels. Traditional aircraft that are being converted to electric as well."

These conversions are significant because they expand the immediate use-case ecosystem. Electrified aircraft like the eBeavers and Pipistrels can operate commercially now, without waiting for future certification. They are not theoretical concepts but flying realities.

The market's breadth was further highlighted by companies like Air EV, an Israeli-based manufacturer that is planning to produce 30,000 aircraft per year. Wright noted, "They're focusing on producing not 300 aircraft a year, but like 30,000 aircraft a year. They're really looking at it as basically wanting these sold like cars. The new Mosaic rule has opened up a lot of opportunity." This production vision signals a shift from boutique aircraft to automotive-scale manufacturing, which only makes sense if the market extends beyond commuter flying cars.

One of the most memorable moments at Oshkosh occurred during a presentation by Tim Jackson, author of "Dude, Where's My Flying Car." As Jackson discussed electric aircraft, a Beta aircraft took off outside, and the audience rushed out to watch it fly. Wright described it as "a really magical moment for people to be listening to someone tell them about these aircraft, and the talk get interrupted by the aircraft actually flying." Beta reported that their fleet has accumulated 175,000 miles of test flights, demonstrating real-world operational readiness.

The diversity of aircraft at Oshkosh underscored that there is no single right way to build an electric aircraft. Wright observed, "When you see 20,000 planes in front of you, and they're all totally different – some 70 years old, some 10 years old – you realize that innovation has always meant every plane is so totally different." This variety is a strength, as the industry explores multiple design and operational approaches.

For commercial real estate owners, communities, and infrastructure developers, the implications are clear. The electric aviation market is expanding faster and broader than projections suggested. It is not waiting for major eVTOL manufacturers to capture the imagination. Conversions of existing aircraft are already operational, manufacturing at scale is planned, and use cases across emergency services, agriculture, and logistics are being validated.

The infrastructure opportunity is not limited to passenger vertiports in cities. It extends to rural networks supporting traditional aircraft conversions, emergency response, agricultural applications, and logistics. As Wright's company Landings is building a network of 2,000+ rural locations, the market is arriving now, across multiple aircraft categories simultaneously.
