Peru has achieved significant recognition at the World Travel Awards (WTA) 2024, being named 'South America's Leading Destination'. This accolade underscores Peru's growing prominence in the global tourism industry. Additionally, for the seventh consecutive year, Peru has been honored as 'South America's Leading Cultural Destination', highlighting the nation's dedication to preserving and showcasing its rich cultural heritage.
Further cementing its status as a top tourist destination, the Historic Sanctuary of Machupicchu in the Cusco region has been chosen once again as 'South America's Leading Tourist Attraction'. Notably, Machupicchu is the first tourist destination to receive carbon-neutral international certification, reflecting Peru's commitment to sustainable tourism practices.
Peru's culinary excellence has also been recognized with the award for 'South America's Leading Culinary Destination'. This recognition reinforces the country's position as the gastronomic hub of the region. In 2011, the Organization of American States (OAS) awarded Peruvian cuisine the 'Cultural Heritage of the Americas' title, further validating its culinary prowess.
Since 2009, the Peru Export and Tourism Promotion Board (PROMPERÚ) has been actively promoting the country's natural beauty, cultural richness, and outstanding gastronomy. These four prestigious awards not only highlight Peru's accomplishments but also establish it as a cultural and culinary reference point in South America.
Claricia Tirado, Executive President of PROMPERÚ, emphasized that Peru aims to set high standards of excellence in travel and tourism across the region. This pursuit of excellence was also evident in December 2023, when Peru received three awards at the global edition of the World Travel Awards: World's Leading Culinary Destination, World's Leading Cultural Destination, and Lima being chosen as the World's Leading Heritage City Destination.
The World Travel Awards is a globally recognized brand with several regional editions, including Africa, Asia, Australasia, the Caribbean and Central America, Europe, the Indian Ocean, the Middle East, North America, and South America. These awards celebrate excellence across all sectors of the travel and tourism industry.
The latest accolades for Peru at the World Travel Awards 2024 not only enhance its international reputation but also promise to attract more tourists and gastronomic enthusiasts to the country. As Peru continues to garner global recognition, it is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of travel and tourism in South America.
