A rare automotive treasure is now on display at the DFW Car & Toy Museum, capturing the imagination of automotive enthusiasts and historians. The museum's latest addition, a 1966 Mercedes-Benz 600 Six-Door Pullman Limousine, represents a pinnacle of mid-20th century automotive engineering and luxury.
This extraordinary vehicle stands out as an exceptional piece of automotive history. Of the 428 long-wheelbase 600 Pullman limousines manufactured, only 42 were produced in a six-door configuration. Even more remarkably, this specific model is one of just 11 featuring both a factory sunroof and air conditioning.
The Mercedes-Benz 600 was more than just a mode of transportation; it was a technological marvel of its time. Its advanced hydraulic system powered nearly every vehicle function, including a sophisticated self-leveling air suspension. This innovation made the 600 the preferred vehicle for world leaders, entertainment icons, and prominent dignitaries, including papal transportation.
This particular limousine has a unique provenance. Initially retained by Mercedes-Benz to transport visiting engineers and VIP guests, it was later sold to Klaus Kienle, a former head of major repairs and special vehicles at Mercedes-Benz. Kienle played a crucial role in overseeing the 600 series production and later founded Kienle Automobiltechnik, a renowned classic Mercedes-Benz restoration specialist.
The vehicle now resides in the DFW Car & Toy Museum's collection, meticulously maintained with documented service from Mercedes-Benz Classic Center USA. While subtly upgraded with modern entertainment amenities, the limousine retains its distinctive mid-century aesthetic and historical significance.
The museum, transitioning to a new 150,000-square-foot facility in Fort Worth, continues its mission of preserving automotive history. With over 200 cars and 3,000 toys, the museum offers visitors a comprehensive exploration of automotive culture, providing free admission and a unique opportunity to experience rare automotive treasures like this exceptional Mercedes-Benz 600.
