South Fork Instruments has expanded its portfolio by incorporating Remote Optical Watchers (ROW) for oil on water detection, a move that signifies a leap forward in environmental monitoring technology. This innovation, developed by Laser Diagnostic Instruments (LDI), utilizes ultraviolet-induced fluorescence to identify oil films on water surfaces in real time, without the need for physical contact. The technology is poised to revolutionize monitoring in sectors such as refining, marine, aviation, and utilities by providing localized, continuous surveillance to prevent environmental releases.
The ROW system is designed for resilience in harsh field conditions, encapsulated in an IP68-rated enclosure capable of detecting hydrocarbon films as thin as 1 micron from distances up to 10 meters. Its fluorescence detection method sets it apart from traditional LIDAR reflectance- or IR-based systems by remaining unaffected by surface turbulence or lighting variations, making it ideal for a wide range of applications including open water, bund walls, and stormwater outfalls.
Key attributes of the ROW include its high sensitivity and low false alarm rate, thanks to UV fluorescence detection, and its durability in marine and corrosive environments with a stainless steel 316L enclosure option. The system's autonomous operation, supported by low power consumption and compatibility with solar/battery systems, alongside multiple output options, ensures versatility in various settings. Software tools like ROW Configurator and ROW Manager further enhance its utility by facilitating configuration and network monitoring.
John Daly, Technical Director at South Fork Instruments, emphasized the significance of adding ROW to their portfolio, stating it bolsters their capacity to assist clients in navigating the complexities of compliance and environmental risk management. The technology's optical design and adaptable telemetry make it a pivotal solution for early detection of hydrocarbons in both facility and remote environments.
Globally deployed at airports, oil refineries, port terminals, and desalination plants, ROW units exemplify how immediate detection of oil on water can streamline response efforts, decrease remediation volumes, and prevent offsite migration, marking a critical advancement in environmental protection and industrial safety.
