U.S. Term Limits announced today that Terrell A. Williams has agreed to serve as Delaware State Co-Chair for the organization, which advocates for term limits on members of Congress. Williams, a federal civil service professional, civil rights advocate, legal scholar, educator, and military veteran, will help lead the push for a constitutional amendment to limit the number of terms lawmakers can serve.
"I am honored to serve as Delaware State Co-Chair for U.S. Term Limits and help advance this important effort," said Williams. "Americans across the political spectrum are frustrated with career politicians and the dysfunction that has become normalized in Washington. Congressional term limits are a common-sense reform that can help restore trust, accountability, and citizen leadership in government."
Williams brings extensive experience to the role. He serves with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, where he works to protect civil rights through enforcement of federal laws. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor at Lincoln University and Drexel University's Thomas R. Kline School of Law. A Delaware resident for more than a decade, Williams earned his Juris Doctor from Western Michigan University Cooley Law School and holds a Master's degree in Public Administration and a Bachelor's degree in Social Relations from Cheyney University. He is also a veteran of the United States Army and the Pennsylvania National Guard.
"When government becomes more focused on preserving political power than serving the people, reform becomes necessary," Williams continued. "The Constitution provides the states with a pathway to act, and Delaware has the opportunity to help lead the nation toward meaningful change. Our citizens deserve fresh perspectives, responsive leadership, and representatives who remain connected to the people they serve."
Williams' appointment comes as U.S. Term Limits, the largest grassroots term limits advocacy group in the country, seeks to build momentum in Delaware. The organization connects supporters with legislators and works to pass term limits at all levels of government, particularly for Congress. According to the group, term limits are widely supported by Americans across the political spectrum as a way to reduce dysfunction and careerism in Washington.
"We are honored to have Terrell Williams helping lead our efforts in Delaware," said Philip Blumel, President of U.S. Term Limits. "His background in public service, civil rights, education, and constitutional law make him an outstanding advocate for congressional term limits. Terrell understands the importance of accountability in government, and we are confident his leadership will help build strong momentum for term limits reform in Delaware."
The push for term limits has gained traction in recent years, with many states considering resolutions to call for a constitutional convention to propose a term limits amendment. Advocates argue that limiting the number of terms members of Congress can serve would reduce the influence of special interests, encourage fresh ideas, and ensure lawmakers remain connected to their constituents. Critics, however, contend that term limits could deprive Congress of experienced legislators and shift power to lobbyists and the executive branch.
Williams concluded: "Delaware can stand at the forefront of restoring accountability and confidence in our federal government." For more information about U.S. Term Limits and its efforts, visit termlimits.org.
