The Dairy Alliance, a nonprofit funded by dairy farm families in the Southeast, is supporting student-athletes at the TSSAA BlueCross State Basketball Championships by distributing nutrient-rich real dairy milk following each game. The championships are being hosted at Middle Tennessee State University's F&M Bank Arena, with girls' games occurring March 11–14 and boys' championships scheduled for March 18–21.
Through its Milk's Got Game® initiative, the organization provides real dairy milk to aid athlete recovery. The milk delivers high-quality protein, carbohydrates, and electrolytes that help athletes refuel, rebuild muscle, and rehydrate after competition. "Strong performance on the court starts with proper nutrition and recovery," said Joanne Engelhardt-Risko, Chief Marketing Officer at The Dairy Alliance. "Real dairy milk delivers high-quality protein, carbohydrates, and natural electrolytes that help student-athletes refuel and rebuild after intense competition."
Mayfield Dairy is supplying the real dairy milk for the championships, ensuring student-athletes have access to this nutrient-rich recovery option. Beyond athlete support, The Dairy Alliance is engaging fans and families throughout the event with branded giveaways and information about the nutritional benefits of real dairy milk.
The partnership between The Dairy Alliance and TSSAA represents a community-focused approach to supporting youth athletics. "We're excited to continue our partnership with the Dairy Alliance, the Official Milk Partner of the TSSAA," said a TSSAA representative. "It highlights the power of community—bringing local dairy farmers and schools together to support the health, performance, and recovery of high school and middle school student-athletes through the proven benefits of chocolate milk."
This initiative matters because it addresses the critical need for proper post-exercise nutrition in young athletes. Research shows that consuming nutrients like protein and carbohydrates within the recovery window after intense physical activity can significantly impact muscle repair, glycogen restoration, and overall performance in subsequent competitions. For student-athletes competing in back-to-back games during championship tournaments, effective recovery strategies can mean the difference between peak performance and fatigue-related decline.
The Dairy Alliance's presence at these championships also highlights the nutritional value of dairy products beyond basic calcium content. Real dairy milk contains a unique combination of nutrients including whey and casein proteins, which are particularly effective for muscle recovery, along with carbohydrates for energy replenishment and electrolytes like potassium for rehydration. This makes it a natural, cost-effective recovery beverage compared to many commercial sports drinks and supplements.
For the dairy industry, partnerships with athletic organizations provide valuable opportunities to demonstrate the functional benefits of dairy products to a key demographic. Young athletes and their families represent influential consumers who make nutrition decisions based on performance outcomes. Successful recovery experiences at high-profile events like state championships can shape long-term consumption patterns and perceptions of dairy's role in active lifestyles.
The Dairy Alliance supports youth athletics and active communities across eight Southeastern states through such partnerships. More information about their initiatives is available at https://thedairyalliance.com.
