The Italian Barrel, an intimate Northern Italian restaurant in New Orleans' French Quarter, has been awarded the prestigious Award of Excellence in Wine Spectator's 2026 Restaurant Awards. The recognition celebrates the restaurant's outstanding wine program, which features a carefully curated list of at least 75 selections that align thematically with the menu in price and style.
According to Wine Spectator, the restaurant industry is rapidly transforming as diners become more selective about their drinking choices. "As wine drinkers grow more mindful, restaurants are adapting with creative wine programs," said Marvin R. Shanken, Chairman and CEO of Wine Spectator. He congratulated the 4,012 restaurants that earned awards this year, noting that they "continue to elevate the wine experience for guests around the world."
Lori and Kevin Cates, co-owners of The Italian Barrel, emphasized the integral role of wine in the dining experience. "Wine is part of the natural rhythm of a meal at The Italian Barrel—not an afterthought, but something to explore slowly, share generously and enjoy course by course," they said. They credited the entire team for the recognition, stating, "This recognition belongs to our entire team, whose knowledge, care and hospitality make every bottle and every table feel personal."
The Wine Spectator Restaurant Awards, launched in 1981, recognize excellence in restaurant wine service across three levels: the Award of Excellence, the Best of Award of Excellence, and the Grand Award. This year, 2,083 restaurants received the Award of Excellence, 1,830 earned the Best of Award of Excellence, and 99 achieved the Grand Award. The Italian Barrel was among those honored with the Award of Excellence, which requires a wine list of at least 75 selections and a well-chosen assortment of quality producers that match the menu both in price and style.
The Italian Barrel, located at 1240 Decatur Street, is known for its seasonal pastas, composed secondi, and carefully sourced ingredients, all inspired by Northern Italian traditions. The restaurant's wine program is deeply Italian, designed to complement the menu and encourage guests to slow down and share courses. Indoor and heated outdoor seating are available, and the restaurant is steps from Frenchmen Street and across from the New Orleans Jazz Museum.
Wine Spectator's special Restaurant Awards issue will be available on newsstands July 21, 2026. Winners can be searched by name, location, award level, cuisine, wine specialties, and pricing on WineSpectator.com/Restaurants.
