The Soda Crackers have released their self-titled debut album, available on streaming platforms and vinyl, continuing the tradition of original Bakersfield Sound music on physical records. This release represents more than just new music—it signifies the preservation of a distinctive regional musical heritage that influenced country music worldwide.
Rhythm guitarist, lead vocalist, and fiddler Zane Adamo, 32, emphasized the album's local inspiration, stating the project was a "Bakersfield" inspired endeavor from start to finish. The album draws directly from legendary Bakersfield Sound artists who established the region's musical identity decades ago. This connection matters because it demonstrates how contemporary musicians can honor and extend cultural traditions rather than letting them fade into history.
The recording process spanned approximately eleven months, beginning in mid-December 2024 and concluding in July 2025. Much of the work took place at Ecco-Fonic Studio in Northridge, California, under the direction of traditional Country & Western expert Deke Dickerson. Additional sessions occurred at Angel Cowboy Studio in Oklahoma City and with Alex Clark in Norman, Oklahoma. Adamo explained the deliberate pace, noting the band wanted to solidify their identity and sound before releasing music.
The album features ten songs, including six originals by current and former band members and four covers of influential artists. Lead guitarist Ben McCarthy contributed two original tracks—"Don't Start A Fire" and "Blackboard Boogie"—while Adamo wrote "Goin' Broke, Livin' Rich" and "Tomorrow's Used To Be" and re-recorded the band's debut single "Two-Step Solution." Mixing and mastering involved both Dickerson at Ecco-Fonic Studio and Kyle Appleton of Appleton Productions.
For listeners who value physical media, the vinyl release carries particular significance. The album is available online, at Going Underground Records in downtown Bakersfield and Little Tokyo, and at all Soda Crackers shows. Limited edition "Tequila Sunrise" colored vinyl is available alongside standard black records. This vinyl availability matters because it supports both the resurgence of physical music formats and local businesses that specialize in them.
The band will celebrate the release with a show on Saturday, December 13, at the Fairfax Grange 570 Dance Hall, performing songs from the new album alongside covers of influential artists. This event provides community engagement opportunities that strengthen the connection between musicians and their audience.
This album release is important because it represents cultural continuity in an industry often focused on fleeting trends. By consciously connecting to Bakersfield's musical legacy while creating original content, The Soda Crackers demonstrate how regional identities can remain relevant in contemporary music. The dual availability on streaming platforms and vinyl also addresses diverse listener preferences, acknowledging both modern convenience and traditional music appreciation methods.
