Trilogy Metals Inc. (NYSE American: TMQ) (TSX: TMQ) has welcomed the U.S. Department of the Interior’s decision to transfer approximately 1.4 million acres of federal land within Alaska’s Dalton Utility Corridor to the State of Alaska. The company said this move could support infrastructure development, including the proposed Ambler Road project, and help advance critical mineral exploration and development in the Ambler Mining District.
The land transfer is significant because it could facilitate access to one of the world’s richest known copper-dominant districts. The Ambler Mining District hosts polymetallic volcanic massive sulfide (VMS) deposits containing copper, zinc, lead, gold, and silver, as well as carbonate replacement deposits with high-grade copper and cobalt mineralization. Developing these resources is critical for domestic supply chains of metals essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy, and defense technologies.
Trilogy Metals holds a 50 percent interest in Ambler Metals LLC, which owns 100 percent of the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects (UKMP) in northwestern Alaska. South32, a globally diversified mining and metals company, formed a 50/50 joint venture with Trilogy Metals in December 2019. Exploration efforts have focused on two deposits: the Arctic VMS deposit and the Bornite carbonate replacement deposit, both located within a land package spanning approximately 190,929 hectares.
The company has an agreement with NANA Regional Corporation, Inc., an Alaska Native Corporation, which provides a framework for exploration and potential development in cooperation with local communities. Trilogy Metals’ vision is to develop the Ambler Mining District into a premier North American copper producer while protecting and respecting subsistence livelihoods. The land transfer could accelerate this vision by enabling the construction of the Ambler Road, a proposed industrial road that would provide access to the district for mining-related activities.
