UGI Utilities, Inc. will commence a natural gas main replacement project in Manheim, Lancaster County beginning October 2, 2025. The infrastructure upgrades represent UGI's ongoing commitment to maintaining safe and reliable natural gas service for the community while simultaneously creating opportunities for additional homes and businesses to convert to natural gas service.
The project scope includes underground work along multiple streets within Manheim Borough. Construction will occur on North Grant Street between West Colebrook Street and West High Street, West Gramby Street between North Grant Street and North Clay Street, North Clay Street between West Colebrook Street and West Gramby Street, and West Chestnut Street between North Graham Alley and North Grant Street. Work hours are scheduled Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 5:00pm.
This infrastructure improvement project carries significant importance for both current natural gas customers and potential new users. For existing customers, the replacement of aging mains enhances system safety and reliability, reducing the likelihood of service interruptions and potential safety hazards. The project also represents an economic development opportunity for the borough, as natural gas conversion can provide cost savings and energy efficiency benefits for both residential and commercial properties.
During construction, residents and business owners should anticipate temporary disruptions including road closures, detours, and parking restrictions. Natural gas service interruptions will occur as part of the replacement process, requiring UGI technicians to access properties for equipment inspection and relighting procedures. Following the installation of new natural gas mains, temporary restoration will be completed with final paving scheduled for a later date.
The timing of this project aligns with broader energy infrastructure modernization efforts across Pennsylvania. As utility companies nationwide work to upgrade aging systems, projects like this one in Manheim demonstrate the critical balance between maintaining essential services and minimizing community disruption. The conversion opportunity embedded within the infrastructure work provides additional value by expanding access to natural gas service, which remains a cost-effective energy option for many consumers.
