UGI Utilities will initiate a significant infrastructure improvement project next week, targeting multiple streets near the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg. The comprehensive system upgrade involves replacing natural gas main and service lines across eight city streets, with construction scheduled to continue through the end of June.
The extensive project will impact traffic and parking in key urban areas, including North 10th Street, Walnut Street, North Court Street, North 2nd Street, North 3rd Street, Pine Street, South Street, and Oliver Alley. Construction crews will work daily, including weekends, between 7 am and 5 pm, potentially causing road closures, detours, and traffic disruptions.
Residents and business owners in the affected areas should anticipate potential challenges during the construction period. Some properties may experience temporary natural gas service interruptions, requiring UGI technicians to inspect and relight equipment. The utility company emphasized that these upgrades are crucial for maintaining safe and reliable infrastructure.
Transportation officials and local businesses are advised to prepare for potential logistical challenges. Drivers should expect altered routes and limited parking in the designated construction zones. The project's timeline may be subject to weather conditions and specific working constraints, with final paving and street restoration occurring after the underground work is completed.
The infrastructure project underscores UGI Utilities' commitment to maintaining and modernizing its natural gas distribution network. By proactively replacing aging infrastructure, the utility aims to enhance service reliability, reduce potential safety risks, and improve overall system performance for its approximately 760,000 customers across the region.
