Kelli Hull, a native Texan and Texas A&M University graduate, returned to the Hill Country after nearly two decades in Washington, D.C., and identified a significant gap in the local market: there was no nearby source for contemporary designer clothing. Women in the Fair Oaks Ranch and Boerne areas faced a 45-minute drive to San Antonio for a blazer, shoes, or an evening dress. Hull's solution was to open Monkee's of Fair Oaks Ranch, a locally owned, veteran-owned boutique that now serves the community from the Lemon Creek Ranch development.
Hull, who spent 20 years in government contracting advising private companies on business with special operations and intelligence communities, decided to pursue a longtime dream. “It was really apparent to me that we had a fairly substantive gap in the market,” she said. “If you wanted to wear contemporary designers, there was nowhere to get it in this area. I kept hearing from other women that they had the same frustrations.”
Monkee's is a North Carolina-based franchise of locally owned women's boutiques known for carrying major contemporary designer names in small, personal storefronts. Hull first encountered the concept eight years ago in Raleigh, North Carolina, and was impressed by the brand selection. The key is collective buying power. “Because we're a franchise, the buying power the franchisees have together is significant,” Hull explained. “Someone like me – my store wasn't even open yet – could walk into a major showroom in New York and buy for the season ahead. Without that, none of this would be possible.”
Monkee's of Fair Oaks Ranch is the 8th location in Texas and approximately the 67th nationwide, placing Hull early in a growing brand. At just over 1,200 square feet, the boutique offers a curated selection of contemporary designers across a range of price points, allowing customers to shop from day to night without leaving the Hill Country.
The shopping experience at Monkee's is designed to be personal and confidence-boosting. Hull, who has navigated her own wardrobe challenges, including after having children, emphasizes that every customer should leave feeling phenomenal. “A lot of women just need someone to say, 'You're beautiful, that looks good on you – but I think we can do even better,'” she said. “When you look good, you feel good, and that projects out. It's my solemn vow that I'll never let anyone leave Monkee's of Fair Oaks Ranch in something that doesn't look phenomenal on them.”
As a veteran-owned business in Military City USA, Monkee's of Fair Oaks Ranch plans to support the military community, with details to be announced. The boutique is located in the Lemon Creek Ranch development and offers updates on Instagram at @monkeesoffairoaks, with additional information on Facebook and TikTok. The store's website, monkeesoffairoaks.com, provides store details, with online shopping expected to launch in 2027.
The opening of Monkee's of Fair Oaks Ranch addresses a real need in the Hill Country, offering local access to contemporary fashion and a personalized shopping experience that Hull believes will resonate with women in the area. By filling this gap, the boutique not only serves practical needs but also aims to boost confidence and convenience for its customers.
