Three out of every four car seats on American roads today are installed incorrectly, creating a significant safety risk for infants and young children during vehicle travel. This widespread installation problem has prompted the development of a new virtual service that connects parents and caregivers directly with certified safety professionals for personalized guidance.
The free online service allows users to schedule confidential virtual meetings with trained experts at their convenience, conducting sessions right in their own driveways using personal mobile devices. This accessibility addresses a critical barrier for many families who struggle with complex car seat installation requirements but don't know where to find reliable assistance.
For expectant parents like Ana, who is due in the spring, the service provides essential peace of mind. "I know how difficult it can be to install a car seat, but I also understand how important it is to know how to do it correctly," Ana explained. "Utilizing this virtual service with my cell phone, having a safety expert assist me from my home, is a tremendous service."
The program is supported by a grant from Buckle Up for Life to the National Safety Council, bringing professional child passenger safety expertise directly to families nationwide. Gloria Del Castillo, senior specialist of community engagement for Buckle Up for Life, emphasized the importance of removing barriers to proper installation. "We all know installing a car seat can be difficult," Del Castillo said. "So it is important that parents and caregivers aren't shy about asking for help. But they often don't know where to turn to get that help."
Buckle Up for Life, created by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and Toyota, addresses a pressing public health concern as motor vehicle crashes remain one of the leading causes of unintentional child deaths. The organization's safety experts work in communities throughout the nation, checking thousands of car seats annually through both in-person and now virtual platforms.
The virtual education platform represents a significant advancement in making professional safety guidance accessible to all families, regardless of location or schedule constraints. Rosana Rivera, a child passenger safety technician with NSC, described the platform as transformative. "No matter where you live and regardless of your schedule, this platform allows you to meet with an expert, have them view your car seat and get guidance on proper installation," Rivera explained. "After all, every parent deserves to have the confidence of knowing they are doing all they can to help keep their children safe."
Families interested in scheduling a virtual car seat check can access the service through safety-connection.org, with Spanish language support available to serve diverse communities. The program's virtual nature eliminates traditional barriers of distance and scheduling conflicts that often prevent families from accessing critical safety resources.
