Voyageur Pharmaceuticals Ltd. (TSX.V: VM) (OTC Pink: VYYRF) announced it has hired Fluor Corporation to conduct feasibility studies for two key projects that aim to establish a vertically integrated North American supply chain for radiology contrast drugs. The engagement covers a proposed iodine extraction and production facility in Oklahoma, developed in collaboration with Bayer AG, and Voyageur's planned pharmaceutical manufacturing plant for barium and iodine contrast media products.
The iodine project, part of a milestone-based funding agreement with Bayer announced on February 23, 2026, aims to produce high-purity iodine from iodine-rich oilfield brine using Voyageur's patent-pending Mueller process. The integrated manufacturing facility would combine domestically sourced iodine with high-purity barite from Voyageur's 100%-owned Frances Creek deposit in British Columbia, creating what the company calls an "Earth-to-Bottle" contrast media platform.
Voyageur has budgeted US$2,350,000 for the Bayer project feasibility study, with a budget for the integrated facility study to be finalized after testing the company's proprietary Streamline iodine drug manufacturing process. Fluor's expertise in process engineering and large-scale industrial facility design is expected to ensure the studies meet technical, environmental, and economic standards for project financing and regulatory approvals. The studies are targeted for completion in early 2027, potentially leading to a construction decision later that year.
"We are thrilled to partner with Fluor to de-risk and accelerate these projects," said Brent Willis, CEO of Voyageur Pharmaceuticals. "With the iodine initiative and Fluor's technical expertise, we are moving decisively toward securing North America's supply chain for critical medical imaging drugs."
The dual feasibility studies build on recent progress, including Health Canada-approved barium contrast products already generating commercial sales, as reported in August 2025. Subject to successful completion of the feasibility study and further agreement, Voyageur and Bayer may consider advancing the project under an offtake-linked production financing arrangement, where Bayer could provide capital financing while Voyageur operates the project.
This initiative addresses vulnerabilities in the current supply chain for contrast media, which relies heavily on imported raw materials. By controlling domestic sources of barium and iodine, Voyageur aims to reduce geopolitical, logistics, and shortage risks for hospitals and patients in the United States and Canada. The company's end-to-end ownership from raw material extraction to finished pharmaceutical products is expected to deliver lower operating costs compared to competitors who purchase intermediates on the open market.
Voyageur's strategy, encapsulated in its motto "From Earth to Bottle," reflects a commitment to responsible and secure sourcing from North American resources. The company has already developed five barium contrast products with Health Canada licenses and is positioned to become North America's first vertically integrated, low-cost manufacturer of both barium and iodine contrast media.
