The DFW Car & Toy Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, has added a true automotive legend to its collection: a 1967 Toyota 2000GT. This award-winning, white coupe is now on display at the museum, which houses over 200 collector vehicles and 3,000 vintage toys. The 2000GT is widely regarded as the car that changed global perceptions of Japanese engineering and design.
Co-developed with Yamaha and styled by Albrecht Goertz, who also designed the BMW 507, the 2000GT was a hand-built masterpiece. Originally pitched to Nissan and passed on, Toyota seized the opportunity, producing a car that challenged the Porsche 911 and Jaguar E-Type. With a high-revving DOHC inline-six engine capable of 130 mph and up to 200 horsepower in race trim, it combined stunning looks with razor-sharp handling. Only 351 were ever built, including two special roadsters for the James Bond film You Only Live Twice.
This particular example has a notable pedigree. It won both 'Best in Show' and 'Japanese Jewels' at the 2022 London Concours, making it one of the most celebrated 2000GTs in existence. The car also saw racing success under Carroll Shelby, who campaigned it in SCCA events, further cementing its performance legacy.
'This is the most important Japanese car ever made. Period,' said Ron Sturgeon, founder of the DFW Car & Toy Museum. 'It's not just rare—it's a symbol of a moment when the world finally took Toyota seriously as a performance brand.'
The addition of the 2000GT is significant not only for collectors but for anyone interested in automotive history. It represents a turning point when Japan emerged as a serious contender in the performance car market, influencing decades of future designs. The museum offers free admission and is open Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, visit the museum's website at dfwcarandtoymuseum.com.
