International technology group ANDRITZ, in partnership with Slovak engineering firm VUJE, has been awarded a contract by VODOHOSPODARSKA VYSTAVBA to comprehensively modernize the Gabcikovo hydroelectric power plant on the Danube. This facility is the largest hydroelectric plant in Slovakia and a central component of the national energy infrastructure, accounting for approximately 10% of Slovakia's electricity production. The modernization is crucial for ensuring the long-term reliability and sustainability of the country's power supply.
The project involves the renewal and upgrade of the plant's electromechanical equipment, which currently has a total capacity of 720 MW. The order value is in the mid three-digit million-euro range and has been included in ANDRITZ's order intake for the third quarter of 2026. This investment underscores the importance of maintaining and enhancing existing renewable energy assets to meet future energy demands.
As part of the modernization, the eight Kaplan turbine-generator units will be gradually refurbished and brought up to the latest technical standards. The primary goals are to improve the plant's efficiency and availability, and to extend the technical service life of key operating equipment by at least 30 years. This will ensure that the plant continues to contribute significantly to Slovakia's renewable energy mix for decades to come.
The scope of supply includes model testing, engineering, manufacturing, installation, and commissioning. It also covers the modernization of key turbine and generator components, automation systems, excitation, protection, and control systems, as well as the renewal of transformers and auxiliary electrical systems. By upgrading these critical components, the plant will operate more efficiently and reliably, reducing the risk of outages and minimizing environmental impact.
Work will be carried out sequentially to maintain availability during the modernization and minimize the impact on ongoing operations. This phased approach ensures that the plant can continue to generate electricity while upgrades are being implemented, avoiding any significant disruption to Slovakia's power supply.
