June is National Candy Month, and there is no better way to kick off the summer than with a celebration of chocolate and candy. The National Confectioners Association’s (NCA) Carly Schildhaus has embarked on a nationwide media tour to share how these beloved treats enhance Americans’ favorite activities all summer long.
The summer months, filled with holidays, traditions, and special occasions, are a testament to the unique role chocolate and candy play in making memorable moments even sweeter. Whether plans include camping, beach vacations, road trips, or family visits, most Americans will undoubtedly bring their favorite treats along for the fun.
While embracing the carefree spirit of the season, consumers still recognize that chocolate and candy are indulgences. In the U.S., people enjoy these treats 2-3 times per week, averaging just 40 calories and about one teaspoon of added sugar per day.
During National Candy Month, consumers are indulging in a variety of ways:
Top treats: Gummy candy, chocolate, taffy, lollipops, and hard candy are leading the list of favorite summer treats.
Treating on the go: A significant 86% of people going on a road trip will bring along chocolate and candy, 82% will share treats during family visits, and 68% will take their favorite sweets to the beach.
Everything and s’more: An impressive 78% of campers plan to enjoy chocolate and candy, with s’mores being a popular choice. Among s’more enthusiasts, 78% prefer classic milk or dark chocolate, while 22% opt for more innovative ingredients.
Scream for ice cream: When it comes to dressing up ice cream cones, consumers favor chocolate pieces, chocolate sauce, peanut butter candy, and gummy candy as their preferred toppings.
