The Deaf Organizations Fund (DOF) has announced its second Impact Grant for Deaf Organizations, awarding $100,000 in unrestricted funding to four organizations dedicated to supporting and empowering deaf communities nationwide.
The selected grantees—Atomic Hands, Deaf Defy, Inc., DEAFinitely, Inc., and The Black Deaf Project—will utilize the funding to address critical needs within their respective communities, including accessible educational resources, healthcare accessibility, and opportunities for DeafBlind youth.
This year's grant cycle was particularly competitive, with a record-breaking 84 applications submitted by deaf-centric organizations. The selection process employed a participatory grantmaking approach, with a community-led grant review committee playing a crucial role in evaluating applications and making final award decisions.
Zaineb Abdulla, Founder of Deaf Defy, Inc., emphasized the significance of such targeted funding, highlighting the importance of organizations that understand and prioritize deaf community needs. The unrestricted nature of the grants allows organizations maximum flexibility in addressing their most pressing challenges.
DOF's approach goes beyond financial support. The organization is committed to providing comprehensive resources, including grantee coaching, technical assistance, and developing an accessible training program for deaf organization leaders. This holistic strategy aims to build long-term capacity and sustainability within deaf-led nonprofits.
Since its establishment in 2021, DOF has distributed nearly $500,000 among 27 deaf-centric organizations. The fund's mission extends to advocating for disability justice within the philanthropic sector, ensuring that deaf-led organizations receive equitable support and recognition.
