Christie E. Matter, MD, a prominent dermatologist based in Prosper, Texas, has been recognized as a 2024 Castle Connolly Top Doctor. This marks the first time Dr. Matter has received this prestigious accolade, which is awarded to only about 7 percent of the nation's licensed physicians annually.
Dr. Matter co-founded Lockhart Matter Dermatology & Aesthetic Center in Plano and Lockhart Matter Dermatology, Mohs and Surgery Center in Plano in 2021 with Dr. Susanne Lockhart, who is also a Castle Connolly Top Doctor. The practice is set to expand with a second location in Plano in September 2024, which will include a Mohs, facial reconstruction, and cosmetic surgery center. Dr. Aahtman Shah will join the practice to provide a range of cosmetic surgery procedures.
Certified by the American Board of Dermatology, Dr. Matter diagnoses and treats a diverse array of skin conditions in patients of all ages. She is particularly passionate about treating families, from newborns to grandparents, and finds it rewarding to assist patients through all life stages.
Dr. Matter's expertise extends to treating various skin conditions, including premalignant and malignant skin conditions like actinic keratoses, atypical moles, basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas, and melanoma. She also addresses bacterial, viral, and fungal infections, growth and pigmentation issues, and hair loss in both men and women. Her office offers platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments and systemic treatments for thinning hair. Additionally, she specializes in treating acne, folliculitis, and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS).
Emphasizing the importance of skin cancer screenings, Dr. Matter works to educate her patients about skin cancer prevention. She believes that skin diseases can cause both emotional and physical distress and strives to minimize anxiety through patient education, providing the most up-to-date treatments. "I worry about your skin so you don't have to," she tells her patients.
Dr. Matter highlights the importance of dermatological care, especially for individuals over the age of 50. She notes that cumulative sun exposure over time can lead to the development of skin cancers, and older individuals may be on medications that cause sensitivity to the sun, necessitating regular skin exams.
Dr. Matter earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, graduating third in her class. She completed her dermatology residency training at Duke University Hospital and UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, where she served as chief resident in her final year. She also holds a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of North Texas.
The Castle Connolly Top Doctor selection process involves peer nominations and a rigorous review by a physician-led research team. Criteria include medical education, training, hospital appointments, and disciplinary histories. "I am honored to have been nominated as a Connolly Top Doctor. Being selected by your peers for an honor such as this is one of the most rewarding recognitions. It means that your peers trust you as much as your patients do," Dr. Matter said.
