Rochester, MI — Amid a polarized national debate on firearms, veteran instructor and author Rick Billington is launching an educational initiative focused on the responsibilities of gun ownership, moving beyond technical shooting skills to address judgment, legal knowledge, and emotional discipline. Billington, founder of Michigan Pistol Academy, has released his book The Responsible Gun Owner and will begin a six-part blog series on July 12, 2026, titled The Responsible Gun Owner Series.
“Far too much of the conversation around firearms focuses exclusively on the weapon itself,” Billington said. “Very little attention is given to the responsibility, judgment, and decision-making that ultimately determine whether a firearm owner is truly prepared. Owning a firearm is a constitutional right, but responsible ownership requires education that extends far beyond learning how to shoot.”
The initiative aims to challenge misconceptions by emphasizing mental, legal, emotional, and decision-making responsibilities. The book explores preparedness, personal accountability, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, and decision-making under stress. The accompanying blog series will cover topics such as mindset over marksmanship, understanding self-defense law, avoiding conflict, home defense planning, decision-making under stress, and emotional control.
Billington, who brings decades of experience in law enforcement, conflict resolution, and civilian firearms education, warns that many owners focus solely on shooting proficiency, inadvertently increasing risk. “The responsible gun owner should never view a firearm as the first answer to conflict,” he said. “The goal of proper training is not simply becoming proficient with a firearm. It is learning judgment, emotional discipline, conflict avoidance, and understanding when force should never become necessary in the first place.”
The campaign is hosted through Michigan Pistol Academy, which offers both in-person and online training. The blog series will be available at The Responsible Gun Owner Educational Series, with new installments released weekly throughout the summer. The book is available on Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing.
This initiative arrives at a time when the national discourse on firearms often centers on political and legislative battles. By refocusing on individual responsibility, Billington hopes to provide a framework that reduces risks for gun owners and the public. For civilian carriers, the implications are significant: understanding the legal and ethical dimensions of carrying a firearm can prevent tragic outcomes and legal consequences. For the broader industry, this educational push may encourage training programs to adopt a more holistic approach, potentially influencing standards in firearms instruction.
Billington’s message underscores that owning a firearm is not just a right but a serious commitment requiring ongoing education in judgment and self-control. As the series unfolds, it may set a new benchmark for what responsible gun ownership entails, moving the needle from mere proficiency to comprehensive preparedness.
