Garuda Indonesia to Introduce Piece-Based Baggage Policy from September 2026, Offering Up to 64 kg Allowance

Garuda Indonesia is set to overhaul its checked baggage system with the introduction of a piece-based policy, known as the Piece Concept, for tickets issued from September 1, 2026. The national flag carrier announced the change on July 14, 2026, as part of its broader service transformation aimed at modernizing operations and improving passenger experience.

Under the new policy, baggage allowances will be determined by the number of pieces and maximum weight per piece, rather than the combined weight under the previous Weight Concept. Depending on route, travel class, and fare category, passengers may check up to two pieces weighing a maximum of 32 kilograms each, totaling 64 kilograms. This marks a significant increase from current allowances, with some passengers receiving up to 34 kilograms of additional checked baggage capacity.

Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills emphasized that the change is designed to provide greater clarity and consistency. “The implementation of the Piece Concept forms part of Garuda Indonesia’s broader transformation to modernise our services and provide passengers with greater certainty,” Mills said. “Clearer limits on the number and maximum weight of baggage pieces will allow passengers to plan and prepare their baggage more easily.”

For domestic flights, Economy Class passengers will receive one piece up to 23 kilograms, while Business and First Class passengers will get two pieces up to 32 kilograms each (64 kg total). This compares with previous Weight Concept allowances of 20 kg for Economy, 30 kg for Business, and 40 kg for First Class. On international routes, Economy Class passengers will be allowed two pieces up to 23 kilograms each (46 kg total), up from 30 kg previously. Business and First Class allowances on international services will increase to 64 kg from 40 kg and 50 kg, respectively.

The Piece Concept is widely adopted across the global aviation industry, and its implementation at Garuda Indonesia is expected to strengthen service standardization and support more efficient baggage handling, particularly for passengers connecting to international networks. “The Piece Concept is widely adopted across the global aviation industry. Its implementation at Garuda Indonesia is expected to strengthen service standardisation, support more efficient baggage handling and provide passengers with greater certainty, including when connecting to international flight networks,” Mills added.

Passengers whose tickets are issued before September 1, 2026, will continue to receive the baggage allowance stated on their tickets, even for travel after that date. To ensure a smooth transition, Garuda Indonesia encourages passengers to review the new policy details, including allowances based on route, travel class, and fare category, on its official website at https://www.garuda-indonesia.com/id/en/new-baggage-policy. Further information is also available through the Garuda Indonesia Contact Centre and official social media channels.

Mills concluded, “The implementation of the Piece Concept represents another important step towards delivering services that are more transparent, consistent and aligned with passenger needs. Through this modernisation, we aim to provide greater value and a more comfortable and seamless travel experience, while continuing to uphold the highest standards of safety and compliance with applicable aviation regulations.” The policy will be reviewed and refined based on passenger feedback, reflecting the airline’s commitment to continuous improvement.
