As the Democratic Republic of the Congo grapples with the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record, GeoVax Labs, Inc. (Nasdaq: GOVX) is underscoring its potential role in the global response. The Atlanta-based biotechnology company, which develops vaccines and immunotherapies, announced today that it is prepared to engage with public health authorities to determine if its vaccine candidates and expertise could help combat the spread of the Bundibugyo virus (BDBV).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the outbreak has already surpassed 4,300 cases and 2,000 deaths, with transmission continuing in conflict-affected areas. There is currently no approved vaccine specifically for Bundibugyo virus, making the situation particularly urgent. GeoVax, which has extensive experience in developing vaccines against high-consequence hemorrhagic fever viruses, believes its Modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) platform could offer a solution.

“The rapidly escalating Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak underscores the importance of having vaccine technologies and capabilities available before a crisis occurs,” said David Dodd, Chairman and CEO of GeoVax. “We are prepared to engage with WHO, Africa CDC, national public health authorities, and other appropriate organizations to determine whether our vaccine candidates, technology, or scientific expertise could contribute to the response.”

GeoVax's portfolio includes vaccine candidates targeting Zaire ebolavirus, Sudan ebolavirus, and Marburg virus, all of which have shown protective efficacy in non-human primate lethal-challenge studies. While these candidates are not specifically designed for Bundibugyo virus, the company's MVA platform could potentially be adapted. GeoVax has expressed willingness to make relevant vaccine materials available for evaluation against BDBV.

The company’s lead infectious disease priority remains GEO-MVA, an MVA-based vaccine for mpox and smallpox. GeoVax is preparing to initiate a pivotal clinical development program based on an immunobridging accelerated regulatory pathway, with portions of the program expected to be conducted in African regions facing significant infectious disease challenges, including areas affected by the current Ebola outbreak. These planned clinical activities have already led to relationships with healthcare and research organizations in the region, some of which are directly involved in Ebola response efforts.

“Our relationships in the region are being developed first and foremost to advance GEO-MVA, but many of the organizations with whom we are engaging are simultaneously confronting this Ebola outbreak,” Dodd added. “Given our experience, we believe it is appropriate to ask how we might help. Any such effort would be pursued collaboratively while maintaining our operational and capital focus on GEO-MVA.”

GeoVax retains a broader portfolio of MVA-based hemorrhagic fever vaccine candidates that have demonstrated protective efficacy in animal models. These assets represent strategic optionality beyond GEO-MVA, and the company is open to collaborations, licensing arrangements, and public-private partnerships that could further evaluate and develop these candidates without diverting resources from its primary program.

The company believes its combination of MVA platform expertise, hemorrhagic fever vaccine candidates, and work on scalable MVA manufacturing provides a foundation for potential collaborations addressing Ebola and other emerging infectious disease threats. As the outbreak continues to escalate, the need for innovative solutions has never been more critical. GeoVax's proactive stance highlights the importance of preparedness and collaboration in global health security.
