For over twelve years, Duo Duo Project has maintained continuous operations in China, working to change cultural attitudes through humane education, community outreach, and sustainable stray population control methods. Founder and Executive Director Andrea Gung established the organization based on the conviction that empathy can overcome cruelty and that eliminating the dog and cat meat trade represents an achievable goal within our lifetime. Gung reflected on the organization's evolution, noting that what initially seemed impossible has transformed into a viable movement that continues to win hearts across international borders.
The London event featured updates on the organization's groundbreaking Spay and Neuter Training Center, the first facility of its kind in China designed to train veterinarians and animal welfare workers in humane methods for reducing stray populations. This initiative addresses one of the fundamental supply sources for the meat trade. Gung explained the strategic importance of this approach, stating that reducing the population of stray animals vulnerable to the trade directly undermines the industry's viability. Each sterilization procedure represents both an individual life saved and progress toward permanently ending the cruelty associated with the trade.
During the symposium, Duo Duo Project presented its inaugural Compassion Beyond Borders Awards, recognizing international partners who exemplify global collaboration in animal welfare. This year's honorees included Nancy Janes of Romania Animal Rescue and Karen Reed of Dogs Trust UK, whose award was accepted by Charlotte, a member of the Duo Duo Pack UK. These awards symbolized the expanding network of organizations transforming compassion into tangible change worldwide. Christy, Director of Campaigns and Development at Duo Duo Project, emphasized the campaign's achievable nature, describing the elimination of the dog and cat meat trade as a winnable battle that can be accomplished within our generation.
The organization continues to fundraise for completion of the Spay and Neuter Training Center through its Virtual Buy-A-Brick Campaign at https://www.duoduoproject.org, enabling global supporters to directly contribute to building the infrastructure necessary for compassionate animal welfare solutions. Each contribution advances the center toward completion, bringing the world closer to a reality where fewer animals face the risks associated with the meat trade.
