The Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races will mark their 50th anniversary this weekend (June 27-28) with an expanded 13-day festival program, showcasing the city's position as the Events Capital of Asia. Co-organized by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) and the Hong Kong China Dragon Boat Association, the event also celebrates the 35th anniversary of both the association and the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF), which earlier this year announced the relocation of its headquarters back to Hong Kong.
More than 220 teams from 16 countries and regions will compete in Victoria Harbour, with new additions including the 50th Anniversary Fishermen Invitational Cup and the 50th Anniversary Championship. Dr. Peter Lam, Chairman of the HKTB, emphasized that the extended festival period—from June 19 to July 1—offers a stronger race line-up and more vibrant entertainment programs, including a 22-meter traditional wooden dragon boat, a Minions & Monsters-themed installation, live music, and intangible cultural heritage performances such as Wing Chun and Chinese juggling.
The IDBF's formal incorporation in Hong Kong on April 29, 2026, marks a strategic move to anchor the federation in the city where international dragon boat racing began. "Incorporation in Hong Kong is not a conclusion, but a beginning," said IDBF President Claudio Schermi. The IDBF has applied for funding under the HKSAR Government's Pilot Scheme to Strengthen the Presence of Hong Kong in Asian and International Sports Associations, designed to support sports associations establishing headquarters in the city.
The Dragon Boat Festival, dating back over two thousand years, commemorates the poet Qu Yuan. Legend says villagers raced out on dragon boats, banging gongs and drums to scare away fish from eating his body. Today, the tradition continues across Hong Kong, with the international races highlighting the city's unique heritage.
The event is part of "Hong Kong Summer Fun," underscoring the city's role as a global hub. Visitors can enjoy thematic activities along the Avenue of Stars, including a dragon boat installation and cultural performances. The festival concludes on July 1, the 29th anniversary of the Establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.
